How This Calculator Works
This tool chains together three commonly published fluid-therapy conventions:
- Maintenance rate — 132 × BW(kg)^0.75 ml/day for dogs, 80 × BW(kg)^0.75 ml/day for cats.
- Dehydration deficit — % dehydrated × BW(kg) × 1000, commonly replaced over roughly 24 hours.
- Ongoing losses — a direct ml/day estimate you enter based on observed losses (e.g. vomiting, diarrhea).
The total fluid plan is maintenance + deficit + ongoing losses, converted to ml/hr and then to drops/min for the selected drip set.
Worked Example
A 20 kg dog, maintenance only, no deficit or ongoing losses:
132 × 20^0.75 ≈ 1249 ml/day ≈ 52 ml/hr
At 52 ml/hr on a 15 gtt/ml set, that works out to roughly (52 × 15) ÷ 60 ≈ 13 drops per minute.
