How This Calculator Works
A gravity IV set delivers fluid one drop at a time, and every set is calibrated to a known number of drops per millilitre — its drop factor (gtt/ml). To run a prescribed rate by eye, you convert millilitres per hour into drops per minute:
Drops per minute = (rate in ml/hr × drop factor in gtt/ml) ÷ 60
- Macrodrip sets — 10, 15, or 20 gtt/ml. Larger drops, suited to higher rates and larger patients.
- Microdrip sets — 60 gtt/ml. Small, countable drops for low rates and small patients.
If you know only a total volume and the time to give it over, the tool first derives the hourly rate (ml/hr = volume ÷ hours) and then applies the drip formula. It also reports seconds per drop (60 ÷ drops per minute) so you can time the drip chamber with a watch.
Worked Example
Running fluids at 60 ml/hr on a 15 gtt/ml macrodrip set:
(60 ml/hr × 15 gtt/ml) ÷ 60 = 15 drops per minute
That is one drop every 60 ÷ 15 = 4 seconds. On a 60 gtt/ml microdrip set the same 60 ml/hr rate becomes (60 × 60) ÷ 60 = 60 drops per minute, or one drop every second.
